Everyone faces challenges in life. But, being born with a disability can make life much more difficult than it would be otherwise. It is even worse when the disability is so incredibly rare that it does not even have a name. Angus Palmes, who is now 13 years old, was born weighing 6 pounds, seven ounces. However, an abnormal chromosome has stunted his mental development and physical growth. He is 3'1" tall and only weighs 30 pounds.
When he was three years old, Angus stopped growing and has never learned to speak. He gets so angry when he is unable to communicate that he will start to harm himself out of frustration. However, his mother says that he is a happy little guy most of the time.
The condition that Angus has is so rare that there is only a one in seven billion chance of someone being born with this condition. It is believed that Angus is the only person alive who suffers from this condition.
When his condition was originally identified, doctors told his mother that he would never be able to walk. Miraculously, Angus proved them wrong. He is able to walk with some assistance from his mother. However, they did not warn his mother that he was going to be a child for the rest of his life. The discovered his condition by accident and there are no records of anyone else having it. It is just one big mystery with no name.
Angus and his mother appeared on the British talk show called 'This Morning.' Viewers were not exactly happy with how his mother compared other genetic disorders like Down Syndrome as "bog standard" when compared to Angus' condition. While we all know what Down Syndrome is and that it is a more common disorder, but it does not mean that people who have Down Syndrome have easy lives.
Despite her poor judgment for what she had to say on the show, the audience fell in love with the bubbly young boy. He demonstrated how he uses hand signals as part of non-verbal communication. The hand signal he is using in this photo is his signal to show that he is happy.
In the UK, there are over one million kids who have some sort of disability, but Angus is one of a kind. He is truly unique in every way. Here you can see the whole interview on the 'This Morning' show.
