Walmart is widely known for its super low prices and rollbacks. However, under no circumstance will a laptop from this store ever cost less than a cup of coffee! One Florida woman tried to get away with purchasing $1,825.20 worth of items for a mere $3.80.
Gotta Love Those Roll Back Prices
Most of us love Walmart because of their great prices and the fact that you can buy just about anything you need in one spot. It is not strange for any of us to try to take advantage of some of their amazing deals. However, this Florida woman took things to an entirely new level. She tried to check out $1,825.20 worth of electronics for just $3.80.
Trying To Be Slick
Cheyenne Amber West went to a self-checkout machine with a laptop, some game controllers, and a few other items. She and her mother had been shopping in the store when they decided to swap out barcodes on their items with the barcodes of items from the clearance section of the store. They used the self-checkout in hope that nobody would notice that their items did not match the sticker prices.
The mother-daughter duo scanned all of their items through the machine and thought they were going to get away with it when their total came up to just $3.80. But, a security guard caught on to what they were doing. When Walmart staff added up the true cost of the items, they totaled $1,825.20. That would have given the pair a discount of nearly 99%. We have all found some really great deals at Walmart but never that good!
Walmart employees notified the local authorities, and Cheyenne was charged with felony grand theft and shoplifting. Her mother did not get charged.
It's not like she is broke.
Cheyenne told the police, "I am just trying to get gifts for my son that I cannot afford." She then added, "The computer is for my husband. Since he just got me a Coach purse, I figured he deserved something nice as well."
Even though Cheyenne was trying to dodge the $1,825 price tag, she had no issues coming up with the $3,000 for her bail.
Three Types Of Shoplifters
Walmart is definitely not new when it comes to dealing with shoplifters. Some of their locations catch two to three shoplifters every day. According to a loss prevention supervisor, there are three main types of shoplifters.
The first type of shoplifter is one who commits petty theft. They usually steal small, cheap items. The most stolen item is home pregnancy tests. Theives will take them off of the shelf and head to the bathroom where they will take the test and throw away the evidence.
Next, there are serial thieves. These people will steal items only to take them to the returns counter for cash. Most of these items are small and expensive like printer cartridges and hand tools.
The third type of thief are the ones who belong to theft rings. They will steal any and everything nearly every day. It becomes like their job and most will resell these items at other locations like convenience stores.
Say it ain't so...
The supervisor also revealed that one of those shoplifting rings involved a group of senior citizens who all lived close to each other. One person would steal an item, then another one would return the item for cash.
Cheyenne is just another name on a very long list of people who have been caught shoplifting. Her mother, who got away with not being charged even though she was clearly complicit, said that she knew exactly what her daughter was doing. She even told a local deputy, "Yes, I know what my daughter was doing but I never walked out with anything, and she is just trying to get gifts for her son."
That IS bad.
Sounds like another day at Wally World. They have security cameras for a reason. Chances are if you are going to try to steal something, you are very likely to get caught.
Theft is so bad in one Jacksonville store, this woman almost had her kid stolen...
